If you love Japanese crisps you’ll likely recognise the brand Calbee. They make the classic shrimp flavoured chips and Snapea Crisps. And if you’re lucky enough to live in the San Francisco Bay Area or are there on holiday, you’ll love the Calbee Shop. It’s the first ever Calbee shop in the world, offering “sold only in Japan” crisps, ranging from curry flavoured potato sticks to thickly sliced veggie crisps.
I was disappointed that they didn’t carry zunda jyagariko (ずんだじゃがりこ） but rather enjoyed the Island Special and the Garden Duo. Other than those two flavours, the choice of crisps was not that impressive. The price of the crisps was also on the high side so I am not sure how long they will be able to carry on with the “posh crisp” model.
I highly suggest that the Calbee Shop upgrade their containers to reusable and airtight trays (keeping with the San Francisco theme), as I have heard feedback from other mates that the crisps get soggy after only a day in the cardboard packaging. Go green and keep the crisps fresh! And don’t forget, bring us some zunda jyagariko! Other than those small points of criticism, well done Calbee!
