Hoover Dam, located 30 miles southeast of Las Vegas, is another one of those obligatory must see places for tourists. It is a concrete arch-gravity dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between the U.S. states of Arizona and Nevada and most certainly worth a visit if you have a few hours in the day to spare. I was hoping to come away with some cool Hoover Dam tat but everything in the gift shop was a bit sad looking, not to mention packed with tourists — possibly many of the same we saw on the Strip!
I think my favourite bit about this mini adventure was going across the Hoover Dam bypass — still can’t imagine how people could have built any of it, the bridge or dam. It’s another one of those ridiculously grand man-made structures that I haven’t really seen anywhere else. If you do plan on making a trip out there, be aware that there is a security checkpoint that everyone must clear before entering the area. Traffic is slow due to this but so long as you don’t look like a complete nut-job, I reckon they let everyone through!
