When you think of Maui, what do you think of? The Road to Hana? The sunrise at Mt. Haleakala? Relaxing on the beach? Well, we think of all those things, too, but we also think of the fabulous selection of tourist tat you can find in various shops, especially all the tasty food! Food gifts are big in Hawaii but due to that silly thing called customs regulations we were only able to bring back a choice few. Walmart (think ASDA) and Long’s Drugs (think Boots) are the best shops for all of your food gifts. Other places like Whalers General Store and ABC Store sell the same items for two or three times the price.
Our all time favourite island snack are the Maui Cook Kwees. If you’re ever in Hawaii (but don’t happen to find yourself in Maui) you can still find these tasty biscuits on the other islands. You must try the original coconut and macadamia nut shortbread cookies, which are so light and nutty and delicious. We also tried the Kona coffee variety and found that nothing beats the coconut and macnut flavour!
If you’re looking for ‘quality’ tourist tat, I would reccomend Whalers General Store as for some reason ABC Store seems to carry more ‘cheap’ looking tat, even if the prices are about the same. I found these uber-cute island-themed emery boards at WGS as well as the pineapple serving board.
