101 Amazing Facts

…about me!  So perhaps amazing is a bit strong, but at least I caught your attention!  Here is a list of random facts about me in no particular order (other than being numbered) that will hopefully give you a better sense of who I am.  And perhaps this will inspire you to make your own list of 101 facts about yourself!

  1. I speak three languages (English, Japanese and Mandarin Chinese).
  2. That said, I am only fluent in reading and writing English, highly proficient in Japanese, but barely literate in Chinese.
  3. I once tried to bake a chocolate cake using a plastic catering box.  In my own defense, at the time the ‘oven’ I was using contained both a microwave and baking function.
  4. I lied.  I made the same mistake twice in one month and ended up with an unsalvageable oven and an incredible loss of confidence in my baking skills.
  5. While we’re still on the topic of ovens, I once put a metal mixing bowl in a microwave oven. Needless to say, my boyfriend at the time (now hubby) was unimpressed.  Again in my defense, the bowl had a rubber (plastic?) bottom and had a nice white coating so it didn’t really look very metal-like.
  6. I can curl my tongue.
  7. I can also taste my own tongue due to my ability mentioned in #6.
  8. I once was a half-decent violinist.
  9. I also used to play the viola.
  10. These days, I enjoy putzing about on the piano.
  11. I’m deathly afraid of heights.  Even going up a lift makes me anxious.
  12. And hence, I am also afraid of flying.
  13. Even though I dislike being in the air, I love to travel so must put up with it or put myself to sleep during long haul flights.
  14. I’m not keen on onions.  Bleugh.
  15. That said, I enjoy onion flavoured crisps and can also have them if well-cooked in soups and sauces.
  16. The same cannot be said of spring onions.  They are evil and the only way around vomming if I am forced into an encounter with them is pinching my nose and swallowing them without getting any of the flavour.
  17. I spent my 16th birthday on tour with my youth symphony in Beijing.
  18. Although I’d likely never qualify for something like X Factor or The Voice, I believe I’m an absolute star when it comes to singing (haha, not really).
  19. I love Moomins!
  20. My life generally begins after 5pm, although there are some moments when my job inspires me.
  21. For the most part, I feel stifled, which is why I enjoy blogging as writing keeps my brain nimble.
  22. I also love piggies.  Mainly mini ones and of course Zashikibuta, who I don’t think many people know about (ooh, new post idea).
  23. I can’t skip rope.
  24. I didn’t really get into blogging until a year after I joined WordPress.
  25. I take Taro (太郎) a.k.a. Monkey with me wherever I travel.

  27. Did I mention I really love Moomins? Ah, I have in #18, but I really love them so I’m going to say it again here.
  28. I’m double-jointed.
  29. It’s a bit odd, because even my knees are hypermobile.
  30. I appreciate food so much that it’s safe to say that I live to eat.
  31. That said, I’m a rather horrible cook.  I hope to change that over time.
  32. At least I have nearly perfected my own chawanmushi recipe.
  33. I strongly dislike zealots.
  34. I also dislike hypocrites.
  35. I’m not fond of cats, either.
  36. Cats look more like tigers to me and hence, they scare me.
  37. I was once afraid of dogs but then fell in love with a sweet little Scottish west highland terrier named Blossie.
  38. I semi-adopted Blossie and only had her for less than 6 months but cried for weeks after she was put to sleep.
  39. I had quite a scare on my first night dive.  Note to self: regulator in before descending!
  40. I’ve lived in four countries (Britain, Japan, Taiwan, and America).
  41. It took me 45 minutes to come up with 41 facts about myself.
  42. When I was in kindi, I once poked a girl in the eye because I didn’t want to share my mum with her.

  48. I gained 40 lbs. since Uni and have been trying half-heartedly for a year to lose 2 stone. Eh, 1.5 stone would actually be better but can’t trust myself to keep off the weight so it’d be good to have the extra cushion.
  49. I didn’t quite know where babies came from until I was 18.
  50. Perhaps most people don’t realise it, but I’m actually quite intelligent.
  51. I had major surgery due to a cycling accident when I lived in Japan.
  52. I’ve been in an ambulance three times (all in Japan).
  53. I guess you could say I’m a bit clumsy.
  54. I invented a cure for the common cold!  Okay, maybe not, but I had to throw that in there to see if you were paying attention!
  55. That said, I absolutely swear by high doses of Vitamin D3 (10,000IUs+)–they are the reason why I haven’t been ill since November 2011, which is a miracle for me.
  56. Before seeing them in the flesh I thought wombats were disgusting creatures.
  57. Wombats are now one of my favourite animals.
  58. I have a problem with crying.  I can get overly emotional during a film but as soon as something like a BBC news report on a foreign war comes on my eyes automatically dry up. I promise it’s not that I don’t care!
  59. I’m not great with geography, but who is?
  60. I rarely get mani-pedis but when I do I almost always get french nails.

  1. Whoaaah! I read you all the way to 101 and retraced #22 and chuckled, grinned, nodded and…..I think I seriously like you already!! Pretty amazing you and of course the fact that you’re a great fan of the Moomins just like my little boy endeared you to me immediately. That and cats, manuals (no do) and chawanmushi (yes!). Let’s be friends 😀 Sharon

    • Thank you so much for your kind words and for taking the time to comment on my blog. It is always nice to know when someone ‘sees’ me. Although I write because I enjoy it, I often feel invisible to the world. 😛 Your Daily Reminders really speak to me and are so well stated I may have to quote you one day! They truly are the perfect reminders to keeping a good balance throughout life. 🙂

  2. This is such a good idea – I love it! 🙂 I think I am a lot like you haha. There are at least 15 that describe me perfectly – I hate heights with a passion. My fiance loves views from rooftops – I am the idiot you see crawling across the floor, if I walk, I seem to fall over, or get queasy. And the ocean oddly makes me claustrophobic! Your views on politics, brushing teeth and microwaves are somewhat comforting – I am not the only one! 🙂 x

    • Thanks for your lovely comments! x You should make a list, too! 🙂 Ah, so I’m not alone on microwaves–hubs always said it was ‘common sense’ but I never grew up with one so how could it be? Will def let you know how Airbnb turns out. Really hoping it’ll be good as the flat will be our home for a week!

  3. Wonderful post! This is such a great idea….may post something similar on our blog. Hope you’re having a great weekend 🙂
    – Jo

  4. What an amazing list! I may be inspired to do one of my own, as that was actually very interesting! I have fallen in love with the Moomins since moving to Finland, and am slowly adding to my collection, as my budget is severely crimped for such things. But I can live vicariously through yours. 🙂 Thanks for finding my blog and I hope to read more of your Moomin adventures!
