True Colours of Moomin

The other day Mr. S showed me a Moomin light that his coworker had and of course I became obsessed with getting my hands on one, too.  It must be my lucky month as not long after I received two of these in the post — a belated birthday present from Japan!

Moomin Light

Here is Moomin showing off a more pastel look with the lights on…

And now Moomin with the lights off for a more neon look…

Moomin light - neonNeedless to say, I’m super chuffed! The Moomin light has a nice calming effect and I could watch Moomin change colours for hours.  Which do you like better? Pastel or neon?

A Birth-tea Surprise

The other day I received a lovely ‘birth-tea’ surprise from The G, and with that we continue our debate on tea: Twinings vs. Fortnum and Mason.  It will take me a while to try all the different tea available, but I can tell you now without a doubt that I would choose a cup of Countess Grey over Lady Grey any day. It’s my absolute all time favourite!

Russian Caravan and Afternoon TeaThanks to The G, I now have over 20 new teas to taste and compare!  In the coming months I’ll be writing short reviews on each tea and at some point we’ll come to the final verdict.

Twinings Tea Caddy

I love both tea caddies — each serves a different purpose.  Twinings, being more ‘practical’ and good for every day use and Fortnum and Mason more celebratory and decorative. Though I must say the Twinings caddy is also simple and elegant. The Fortnum and Mason caddy is a special blend of Coronation tea. I’d like to collect them all, especially the Empire and Celebration tins!

Fortnum and Mason Tea CaddyAnd we mustn’t forget our every day teas, such as Twinings’ Ceylon, which I must say is quite nice. I am generally a Yorkshire girl for every day tea but I may just mix it up and switch to this as it’s a lot smoother.

Twinings CeylonI suppose when you’re choosing the right tea, it really depends on your mood and what flavour profiles you prefer. I’m really looking forward to this tea exploration. Do you have a favourite that you think I should try?

A Lovely Surprise

Sadly, I seem to have lost my blogging mojo, but perhaps the arrival of a lovely pre-birthday surprise will give me some new inspiration. I’m on week 5 of the Moomin Challenge, and am proud to report that I have not missed a single run! I’ve broken a few PRs along the way and have now graduated from 20 to 30 minute runs. I have not seen any drop in weight but according to my friend A, that will all come in good time. Or so we hope…

Now for the good stuff. Can you guess what is inside this beautifully wrapped package?

PressieI could barely contain my excitement as I carefully untied the ribbon and undid the wrapping to reveal…

Moomin Handkerchief

The most beautiful Moomin handkerchief and something that has been on my wishlist for ages, and I really mean ages!

Moomin Kitchen Timer

I still don’t know how V knew that I wanted this particular kitchen timer, as I had never mentioned it to her. The timer is made by Bengt Ek Design, and the ticking noise reminds me of old stopwatches and I love how solid the buzzer sound is, unlike the high-pitched chirping that you get from modern digital timers. Thank you, again, my darling V for thinking of me and for giving me the pick-me-up that I need to get through the second month of running! Your timing is always impecable! xoxo

From Moomin, With Love

September really has been all about Moomins, hasn’t it? And now here is more Moomin, albeit just a wee post to wish my dear brother a very happy birthday! Although I highly doubt he follows my blog, here’s wishing him a fantastic year full of love, health and happiness.

And while we’re celebrating birthdays with Moomins on this fine 28th September, I would also like to wish Miss V (G’s baby sister), many happy returns of the day. Hope you had a smashing time in Istanbul!

Here is the card I sent me brother — hope he loves it! You can also get your very own from Artbox!

Birthday Wishes And Life Lessons

The older I get the more importance I place on birthdays, at least in terms of celebrating them. You’d think it’d be the opposite, but as a child we didn’t really do birthdays. So I told myself that when I grew up I’d make it a point to at least acknowledge that I had made it safely through another year. Life, after all, is unexpected and therefore worth celebrating any chance you get!  Not to mention, it’s a great time to self-reflect and re-evaluate and establish goals for the year to come.

I suppose I ought to give a shout out to Tom Cruise, since it seems he might need a bit of birthday cheer, but this is about me!  And I wouldn’t want the crazy Scientologists raining on my parade like they did years ago as I stood crying outside KFC on Tottenham Court Road, waiting for G to come fetch me. Admittedly, I was upset about the Zinger (temporarily discontinued) but probably more so that I had lost my cool with the Scientologists who wouldn’t let me leave despite having told them that they were worse than the Mormons. It certainly makes for a great story now (perhaps I’ll elaborate another time), but I was seriously traumatised!

Ah, but I digress. Where was I? Birthdays and life lessons. Here are ’30-something’ things I’ve learned in life that have helped shape who I am today.

  1. Life is unexpected, always eat dessert first. You could say this is one of my life’s mottos.
  2. Don’t hold a grudge, they only hurt the holder.
  3. Learn to forgive yourself and let go.
  4. It is okay to ask for help.
  5. Failing means you’ve tried and trying is the first step toward success.
  6. Happiness is a choice.
  7. Life really is what you make of it.
  8. Learn from your mistakes.  This might sound simple, but you’d be amazed how many people make the same mistakes twice. Erm…including me…
  9. An example of a life lesson I had to learn twice: don’t bake with plastic catering boxes — they don’t belong in the oven.
  10. Just because everyone else is doing something doesn’t mean I’m supposed to as well.
  11. A moment on the lips, a lifetime on your damned hips.
  12. Every penny counts. As a penny saved is a penny earned.
  13. Be organised — it will make life a lot easier.
  14. Value your friendships.
  15. Love with all your heart.
  16. Embrace spontaneity as it will make life a lot more interesting.
  17. Sometimes mum does know best.
  18. Always get a good night’s sleep.
  19. Don’t go to bed angry.
  20. Always remain curious.
  21. Laugh every day.
  22. Crying does not mean you’re weak.
  23. Be patient with your aging parents.
  24. Thank you and please go a long way.
  25. Sometimes it’s okay to forgive those you love. Sometimes it’s also okay not to. Time will only heal some wounds…
  26. Work smart, play hard.
  27. Know your boundaries and demand that others respect them.
  28. Be kind to yourself and love yourself but don’t make excuses when you know you could do better.
  29. Don’t waste your time looking for people that aren’t looking for you.
  30. Never stop learning.
  31. Health is everything.
  32. Take responsibility for your actions.
  33. Always be polite, but sometimes when necessary it’s okay to tell someone to f**k off.

Though I doubt anyone with the same birthday will be reading this, happy birthday to all of my birthday buddies out there! And here’s wishing myself a fantabulous birthday and a wonderful trip to Iceland to kick off the new year!
